Sol G. Simpson and his family moved to Mason County in 1887, where Sol worked laying railroad ties and rails for the Port Blakely Mill Company's logging railroad. Sol formed "S. G. Simpson Company" in Matlock in 1890. Three of Simpson's brothers joined him in Mason County, and two of them worked for him. Simpson Logging Company opened its first sawmill, the Reed Mill, at Shelton in 1925. Numerous other mills and logging operations along the West Coast have been acquired by Simpson over the years.

SIMPSON TIMBER RAILROAD

Simpson Timber Company, a forth gerneration, operated the last "American Logging Railroad" in Shelton, Washington on the Olympic Peninsula, Olympic National Forest. Sierra Pacific Industries, based in Anderson, California, bought the Simpson in 2015 closing the Shelton Mill, along with railroad transportation operations.

Sierra Pacific Industries is a third generation, family owned and operated forest products company. Harvesting trees is much different than it was 50 or 100 years ago. Sierra Pacific Industries employ modern forest management practices that closely mimic natural forest events. Technology has dramatically improved, and with it, our ability to monitor forest conditions and minimize logging impact on the environment. We have invested in state-of-the-art equipment to optimize every fiber of each tree, including certified participant in the independent "Sustainable Forestry Initiative/SFI" with intent to ensure the "American Forests" are here for generations to come.

The Peninsular Railroad & Lumbermen’s Museum organized in 2015 has saved the remaining 10 miles of line, with mission to reopen for tourist train and private passenger railcar industry. In 2019 negotiation with Sierra Pacific to leased the line including the donatation of former Sipson timber railroad Alco Switcher 900, 1200, 1201, 1202, plus a caboose, track cars and maintenance of way machines
