Fort Ward Amateur Radio Club Contests and Contesting (also known as radiosport) are an important feature in the activities of many FCC Licensed Amateur Radio Station Operators. Contests and contesting provides a unique dimension to amateur radio stations, community engagement event, providing new challenges and interest in amateur radio services. Fort Ward Amateur Radio Club will offer public event for members.
Fort Ward Amateur Radio Club contests come in many forms and take place on many frequencies. Some Fort Ward Amateur Radio Club contests may take place only on the HF bands (160, 80, 40, 20, 15, and 10 Meter), or possibly a single HF band, while others may be focused on the VHF, UHF (above 50 MHz) or microwave frequencies. The contests may also have different radio equipment (RTTY, Telegraphy or PSK31.) or antennas. This will naturally depend upon the frequencies, phone, CW/telegraphy used and radio propagation characteristics. Fort Ward Amateur Radio Club ccontestantsmay focus on contacting as many international countries as possible, whereas other amateur radio contestants may look at contacting as many local, regional, national areas within the United States.
What is certain is that when Fort Ward Amateur Radio Club contest is underway, then the level of activity increases. For some contestants, the bands come alive with activity in a way that does not happen at any other time. For contestants there may be a more modest increase in activity, depends upon localities of reception and electromagnetic propagation.
The origin of contesting can be traced to the Trans-Atlantic Tests of the early 1920s, when amateur radio operators first attempted to establish long distance radiocommunications across the Atlantic Ocean on the short wave amateur radio frequencies. The largest contests are the annual DX contests that allow worldwide participation. Many of these DX contests have been held annually for fifty years or more, and have devoted followings.
