Square Dancing was first documented in 16th-century England, although origins of square dancing can be traced further back to traditional western folk dances and social dances from many countries. Fort Ward Amateur Rado Club Western Halloween Square Dance, has been an integral part of American social life for centuries, as wellas, Bainbridge Island Grange: traditional square dance was vital for generations of islanders, as a rural community in the post-World War II era and continues in modern day square dance.

There are several different types of square dancing tradition. Step dances, like flatfooting, clogging, and buckdancing, are for individuals. Round dances, like two-steps and waltzes, are for couples. Set dances, like square dances, are for groups of couples. A community dance, or frolic, might include all of these dance forms.
