Amateur Digital Networking using the standard Internet Protocol (IP) suite allows the Amateur Radio Operator to take advantage of the vast array of facilities and communication methods developed for use on the "Wired Internet", using amateur radio for independence from the Internet. The Amateur Packet Radio Network/AMPRNet network provides the "Internet Address and Routing" resources to make possible the worldwide amateur radio "Internet Compatible Network". Wifi differentiation, only provides "short-range wireless connectivity", the Amateur Packet Radio Network/AMPRNet enables both community and "Wide Area Amateur Radio Networking".

INTRODUCTION

Internet Networking Websites, provide email, voice over IP, instant messaging, and social networking applications based on the Internet Protocols. In Amateur Radio, besides direct keyboard-to-keyboard realtime "transmisions" (eg: PSK311), there are several amateur radio specific "Computer-to-Computer Radio Networking" schemes, the "Packet BBS Forwarding Network", APRS 2,etc.

Internet Networks have developed its own specialized amateur radio protocol. However, application-specific protocols often lack a generality to allow the network to be efficiently adapted to different uses, and many are dependent on specific features of the underlying transport mechanism. Networks can be difficult to add new features to an existing narrowly defined protocol.
