Last year the United States discovered the railway during the 3rd annual National Train Day. This years rail line communities across the nation will celebrate our American Trains again in 2011. Rail Line Communities will offer a wide selection of specialized activities, including live entertainment, interactive educational exhibits, tours of notable private railroad cars and trains, train rides, food demonstrations, kids’ programs and much more entertainment.

    WHAT IS NATIONAL TRAIN DAY?

Celebrating National Train Day will help raise awareness of the vital role railways interact in our rail line communities and nation’s transportation system. Railway service is a key component of America’s economy and its future. Train transforms the economy by linking rail line communities and creating jobs. With its inclusion as part of the recent economic stimulus bill, freight rail and high-speed rail will change transportation in the United States. With a global concern about ecology and conservation, trains are becoming known as a more energy-efficient way to travel at 457 miles per gallon of fuel.

    AMERICAN RAILWAY HISTORY & CULTURE

Tell your local community railway history (RESOLUTION & DELARATION) and your future plans to improve rail services, here an example:

On May 10, 1869, in Promontory Summit, Utah, the “golden spike” was driven into the final tie that joined the Central Pacific and Union Pacific railways, ceremonially creating the nation’s first transcontinental railroad. Suddenly, the country was united in a way it never had been, and train travel sparked imaginations in small towns and big cities, among folk who desired adventure and businessmen who saw fortunes to be made. The sound of a train whistle was the soundtrack of happy reunions and tearful farewells.

It heralded the arrival of mail, supplies and community economic growth changes. The train became more than the go-to mode of transport for people and goods. It was a proud achievement of engineering vision, technical ingenuity and sweat. It was a cultural force that sparked the creativity of storytellers in songs, movies and novels.

Railways provided jobs for thousands of Americans. The train station became a focal point of every community, from New York City’s Penn Station to the tiny stations that dotted rural America.

    GREAT AMERICAN RAILWAY HERITAGE CELEBRATION

111th CONGRESSinitiated the creation of National Train Day in 2008 and National Rail Passenger Corporation-Amtrak began the major cities event celebrations. However, National Train Day is really an American celebration of the train, as many rail line communities started such dynamic events years ago.

Railroad Days, Train Festivals and National Train Day Celebration of our railway heritage and future train services is for everyone to enjoy. Visit: RAIL FESTIVALS AND EVENT GUIDE

WASHINGTON STATE NATIONAL TRAIN DAY ASSOCIATION is happy that you want to be involved in making this National Celebration of our railways for 2011, and a greater success for your rail line community.
